Walking...

Walking with the Lord, we are walking in the sunshine,
Lift up your hearts for you’re walking with God

- a hymn I used to song in school

A typical conversation:

X : What plans for the evening?
Me: Will be going for a walk.
X : That’s nice! With whom?
Me: Alone
X : ALONE????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It may not be surprising for some of you, but a lot of people find it very astonishing that I walk alone. Including those who see me walking alone.

An immature face on a tall body in crazy clothes. Lips constantly moving. Obviously talking to herself. Occasionally smiling. Often grinning. Walking ALONE.

Walking has been not only a way of exercising but also an outlet for me. A time in the day when I am alone with my thoughts. I have taken so many decisions, made so many plans, thought so many thoughts…..all on the same road I walk on regularly.

Seasons change. Flowers come and go. Kids grow up. Time moves on. While I walk along, a spectator talking to myself, singing and smiling.

Nice way to tune into yourself sometimes :).

  • Yeah, walking alone once in a while is enjoyable. Especially along the sea ... helps clear the cobwebs in the mind ... :)

  • Nice words.Interesting post on walking.Walking is such a pleasure if the surroundings are quiet, green and peaceful.Walking with someone quietly is a wonderful thing to do. No talking, no worries - just simple walking on a beautiful road.
I am reminded of my walks (parikramas) in Vrindavan and Govardhan when I was in college.Kilometers of walking alone on the amazingly soft sands is a very purifying experience.

Keep walking. For, the Lord is always walking with you, even if you stray aside!

“Independence”, that is the first thing that strikes me when I think Walking, or should I say “No dependence”. We do many things that give us joy but walking is something which requires nothing else.

You cannot read but without a book,
You cannot eat when there’s no food,

You cannot ride but without a bike,
When you sing it’s a song you like,

To see a movie, you need a title,
To walk you need no prop or bridle.

It is this carefree air that surrounds a person in a walk that makes it a truly liberating experience. When we walk, for all we know is that we are moving subconsciously while all our senses are doing things they like most. You can hear the birds chirping, see the sun setting, move your arms like you were playing golf or hop a step when you find a lil pot-hole. And very importantly you mind is free to think and analyze even though you are doing something very tangible. You are not sulked or curled up, but you are in perpetual motion the same perpetual motion which helps your brain wander wildly, be it in careless gaiety or immense introspection.

May be this is why we walk, because for once we get to do something without having or knowing anything at all and still end up gaining a big lot. It’s like discovering zero all over again, zero - means nothing but measures everything….

  • I think everybody shud walk alone once in a while if not for anything but to hear ur thoughts aloud and to hear urself speak. Not always necessary to walk with someone else.
Really nice post , Topsee Turvee.
